Small groups exist as the primary means to reach FBC’s goals of biblical community, spiritual transformation, and vibrant mission. We believe that the church exists as a community, not just a ministry or a place to be spiritually fed. In fact, we believe that the Scriptures teach that living in community with other believers is a critical part of growing to be a spiritually mature person. Three components are important for groups to include:
S t o r y
“I am the God of your father; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob . . .”
In the context of small groups, we find safe places to explore our stories; to expose the marring of sin and allow healing to occur. The purpose of the group is not necessarily to find answers or to fix problems. In many cases that may be impossible for anyone to do. The role of the group is to listen to and care for each other as we explore our stories; repenting and forgiving. To use the categories given to us in Romans 12, we weep with those who weep in the painful parts of our stories; and we rejoice with those who rejoice in celebrating redemption and hope.
Small groups provide an ongoing opportunity to connect our stories to God’s
S t u d y
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching . . .”
Small groups invite community members to explore and study the text of the Bible alongside their own stories in deep and profound ways. The small group atmosphere encourages reflection in the areas of spiritual formation, prayer, theology, women’s and men’s issues, parenting, singleness, and marriage, etc. We seek to go beyond simply transmitting information in an academic fashion with the conviction that the Scriptures are, indeed the living Word of God to us. This Word points us to the redemption provided through Jesus Christ.
Small groups provide a safe place to wrestle with and explore the Scripture
P r a y e r
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
Small groups at FBC pray. Prayers for specific needs as well as prayers of adoration and thanksgiving to our Creator are essential to every aspect of the life of a small group. A lifestyle of prayer infiltrates and shapes the practice of community.
Small groups are shaped by a lifestyle of prayer.
During the second week of every month small groups at FBC take a break. This "Meetings Week" is when church business is conducted. Taking time off allows people to be involved in both small groups and leadership committees.
